I don't see how James could not take a threat from Voldemort
seriously. I believe it was Hagrid who said in SS/PS that whenever LV
went after someone, that person died. How could James not be worried
about the safety of his beloved wife and baby?
But you do bring up a good point. Why did James turn down DD's offer
to be Secret Keeper? Did James not trust DD? Was it because he didn't
want to risk the safety of an old man?
