Steve, I can help you with two bits of canon on this ! In FB, as a 
footnote to the werewolf entry it says: 'For a heartrending account 
of one wizard's battle with lycanthropy, see the classic 'Hairy 
Snout, Human Heart' by an anonymous author (Whizz Hard Books, 1975)'.

However, I have to say, the book doesn't sound very academic ! 

On the existence of a WW scholarly research community, see PoA, 
beginning of Leaky Cauldron chapter 'Harry ate breakfast...venerable-
looking wizards arguing over the latest article in Transfiguration 
Today'.
