I believe that Peter took the wand as a souvenir. He probably thought be 
could use it.Or it might have predicted that LV would be parcially destroyed 
that night (I am sure the prophecy we all know about in OotP is incomplete), 
So there fore LV told Peter to look after his wand until he returns.....
