I wonder if this is one of those famous JKR red herrings. The use of 
the conditional tense for example - "may not be alive", "suggesting 
that".

I have a feeling (and I hope I'm right) that she is twisting our 
tails and at the end, Harry will be there with Jo Rowling saying in 
effect "Ha! Fooled you. You were all expecting me to kill him off and 
I didn't!"
