Geoff:
That's an interesting point. Picking up on someone else's point as 
well, Voldemort's possession of Ginny seems to be different to that 
brief possession of Harry in OOTP. Harry was conscious of the fact 
that he was being invaded but, in COS, he is using the possession to 
become real...

"It looked bad all right. But the longer Riddle stood there, the more 
life was dwindling out of Ginny... and in the meantime, Harry noticed
