Now me (Tcy):
I always thought it was just a hint at Neville's supressed magical 
abilities.  Whether you believe in SILK GOWNS or any of the other 
Neville theories or not, it seems obvious to me, that Neville has 
some (cause still unknown) strong, hidden magic skills and his flying 
lessons just gave us a glimpse of the fact that he's not as inept as 
he appears.
