You are correct that we have no canon for the crests on the robes, but we do 
have canon that Lupin is partial to Gryffindor, by the fact in POA, when he is 
drinking the butterbeer with Harry, he toasts to a Gryffindor victory over 
Ravenclaw, also the fact that McGonagall tells Lupin about the tea leaves and 
Harry. From what Lupin says and the canon that we have on friendships between 
the Houses, I would say that Sirius, James, Peter and Remus are all in the same 
house, same year and that it was Gryffindor. 

Lavender and Parvati are best friends, Dean and Seamus also, Weasley twins 
and Lee Jordan, Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle, Cho and Marietta, very few friendships 
are cross house, but it doesn't mean that romantic friendships are in the 
same house.
