I also get the impression that Lupin doesn't use his first name much
himself. The first time his first name is mentioned is Sirius calling
him Remus in PoA. Sirius & Peter presumably use his first name from
their time in Hogwarts together. Dumbledore uses his first name a few
times, but he calls everyone by their first name. The only other
people calling him Remus are Kingsley, and oddly enough, Tonks.
("Don't call me Nymphadora, *Remus*... it's Tonks." )
It's also notable that no one in their right mind calls Hagrid by his
first name. (only Tom Riddle & Ollivander use it)...
