I read it that she did know of his fame.  Her words to the kids 
were "He was rather well known a few years ago; we very much hope 
that this liking for giving autographs is a sign that his memory 
might be coming back a little bit."

She probably knew he was a fraud.  I'm sure most of the staff had 
figured it out themselves.  Not knowing the relationship between him 
and the kids, she may not have wanted to let on too much.
