Carol:
I agree that the portrait won't be Sirius, who (IMO) is "properly
dead" and won't be coming back except as some sort of image. Still, if
Harry comes across a portrait painted after the Prank, it could be a
source of information about the relationship between MWPP and
Severus--assuming that the portrait would be more objective than the
adult Sirius, who still calls Snape "Snivellus"--an iffy proposition
at best. I'm afraid that the portrait, even if he could find one,
would be as much of an "arrogant little berk" as Sirius himself. And a
photograph, apparently, is no help. People can walk out of photographs
(Percy) or "budge up" so the viewer can see who's behind them, but
evidently they can't talk. I think the only source of objective
information is the Pensieve (some of Lupin's memories with Sirius in
them?) Failing that, Harry will just have to find out information from
Lupin himself--the most capable of the three survivors (Peter, Snape,
and himself) of providing Harry with any reliable information about
his father and Sirius as boys.
