I'll grant you "evil is always among us," and I don't think any
ending of the series will change that, but I think there's a difference between
"the most evil wizard who has ever existed (ie: Voldermort)" (POA, US
edition, p.375) and the philosophical statement that evil is always among us.
I think in the series Voldermort is presented as Evil as opposed to the evil that
is always among us. I don't think vanquishing Voldy will change the fact of
evil in the world, but I do think the world will be a safer place after he's gone.
But what will getting rid of him look like? I will not be satisfied with his being
physically dead and the fate of his spirit or essence being uncertain. I think
that situation is just what you labeled it, a defeat. For me being defeated is
different from being vanquished. I want being vanquished to be more
than a defeat. I want his Evil spirit gone from the world. Sure, ole Draco
could also be evil, but I don't think he has the brains or the desire/intent or
grit to be another Evil. I just don't think Draco is that potent of a
character.
And how might Volermort's Evil be vanquished? I confess I ruminate
on JKR's saying that she "almost gave it all away" at the end of COS.
So I expect some intermingling of essences or spirits, the way Ginny
"poured out her soul to me (Tom Riddle), and her soul happened to be
exactly what I wanted... I grew powerful...powerful enough to start feeding
Miss Weasley a few of my secrets, to start pouring a little of my soul back into
her. . ." (COS, US edition, p. 310). I expect something like intermingling
between Harry and LV. In some ways, that intermingling seems to have
started already. And I want to see Harry vanquish LV the same way he
vanquished Tom Riddle -- by instinct, with heart, with humanity, with love, if
you will. JKR can suply the details, but that's the kind of ending that would be
satisfying for me.
