Neri:
Susan, this is only because DD, in this particular occasion you 
mentioned (I'm assuming you mean the end of SS/PS, right?), was 
discussing the results of Lily's sacrifice, while the result of 
James's sacrifice was only found out by the end if PoA, and then DD 
did talk about it. Every time Harry uses his patronus the stag serves 
as a direct allusion to James. I don't think that James' dead is 
underplayed in the books at all.

I agree that there is a definite flavor of gender difference here, in 
that the stag patronus is quite impressive and manly, while Lily's 
protection is something hidden in Harry's blood, but I don't find 
this difference insulting to either James' or Lily's memory.
