in providing Harry with protection.   Naturally that's the simple explanation of a very complicated plot.   I think had the tables been turned and it were James that used the ancient magic, it would have been his death/sacrifice that provided Harry with the protection.    

I'm not trying to over simplify it but when I look at it that way, it's easier to understand and not a gender issue at all.
