Susan's final (no, really--I promise!) reply:
I actually don't see it as a *need* to attribute an ulterior motive, 
either; it's simply that I see it as a possibility.  We are totally 
NOT reading the "she didn't have to die" comment the same way!  You 
see it as a practical statement, I think; I see it as Voldy MAY have 
had some regard or feeling for Lily that meant that *at some level* 
he didn't really want to have to kill her.  And for someone as cruel 
and evil as he is, that possibility fascinates me.  Is there some 
connection to her?  That's all I was getting at, but since I've no 
idea WHAT his thought/feeling/regard might have been, I can't 
explain it well, either! :-)

Hoping this helps my point make a little more sense.
