Carol:
I've been checking into this, too, despite my limited qualifications
as a speaker of American English who has experienced Russian
literature only in translation.

I did find a site that lists Dolohov (but no version of Karkaroff or
Karkarov)as a Russian name. Many of the names have -ov endings. Here's
the URL, for what it's worth:

http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/Former-Soviet-Union/Russia/Surnames.htm

Karkaroff's first name, as I noted in another post, is a Russian
variation of the Old Norse name, Ivor. I think, but have no way to
prove, that both he and Dolohov are intended to be Russian, born at a
time when Muggle Russia was the Communist Soviet Union. How that
relates to the WW or Karkaroff's odd "Englishness," I can't guess.

Have we actually heard Dolohov speak? (Read any dialogue spoken by
him, I mean?) Do we know anything about him besides his use of the
Cruciatus Curse in VW1 and his ability to cast a spell that does great
damage despite his having been "Silencio'd" in OoP? He seems to be
among the scarier DEs--not as wily as Lucius, maybe, but a lot more
formidable than Crabbe, Goyle, Nott, Avery, et al. Is he the sole
representative of the Durmstrang branch of the Death Eaters?
