How about felis silvestri (wish HTML worked here), the
European Wildcat, which happens to sometimes have a reddish coat?
My pet theory about Animagi is not that the ability to become one is
extremely rare, just that few wizards are motivated to put in the hard
work required to achieve it. I would offer in support of that idea
that all three of Lupin's friends achieved it, even Pettigrew, whose
talent was less than the others'.
IOW, becoming an Animagus is like a lot of other things in life.
People could do more if they worked hard enough at it.
