Every single terrible, unpleasant or stupid incident is in place so
that Harry can develop the moral fiber, courage and determination to
stand toe to toe with Voldemort. The Dursleys were a perfect
environment for him. Dudley was a blessing. Draco, ditto.
If Harry's life had been fluff up to age 11, he would have folded in
front of Quirrell/LV immediately. End of story.
In many respects, Snape is always right about Harry. He sees when Harry
is behaving like James and Snape knows any cavalier attitude exhibited
with Voldemort will result in Harry's death.
Umbridges' blood quill did make me rather sick, tho.
