I suppose it could be either, but Lupin doesn't strike me as the type to
eavesdrop. He seems much to straightforward for that. He did know Harry's
name, which could be because he *was* eavesdropping, or because he saw his
scar, or he recognized him as James' son. Either way, I think the
sneakoscope was buzzing because of Scabbers... Throughout the book you
notice it buzzes at odd times, but every time Scabbers is there. JRK sets
it up so you don't immediately realize the pattern (students lying, the
Weasleys tricking each other, or maybe it *is* cheap). In retrospeck,
though, you realize the sneakoscope *always* buzzes when Scabbers is around.
