I thought Sirius was the annoying one in OoTP, encouraging Harry to behave

Okay, so his death wasn't easy, but if you think about it he and
Harry had no real future together. Sirius as a father figure? I don't
think so.

JKR did the same thing with Cedric in book four - he was dating Cho so we
had reasons to dislike him - and then he died. I also felt that she was
doing this with Hagrid as well (I found him VERY annoying in OoTP) so I
wouldn't be surprised if he was next to go. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't
HAPPY that Sirius died and I wouldn't be happy if Hagrid died, but I've
noticed that JKR tends to emphasize the negative traits of characters
especially right before they go. But then again, all her characters are
a balance of positive and negative (which makes them far more interesting)
so I could just be reading into things that aren't there. Anyone else
notice this or am I going crazy?

I *did* notice this. I had heard the leaked truth that Sirius would be the one to
die before OotP came out so when I read the book and that very first scene
where Sirius appears, I was shocked (as was Harry) at the change in tone his
character had taken. The first thing I whought was that JKR was distancing us
(or herself) from Sirius. This little nagging feeling stayed with me throughout
the book and the decreasing 'role' Sirius seems to play.

As to using this to predict the future, not so sure I agree on Hagrid (but I like
him, so I am possibly biased) but did recall thinking early on that Molly
'mollycoddling' Weasley was sure getting on my nerves and that I wouldn't mind
seeing her bite it. I can see her going in Book 6. Actually, same for
Dumbledore.
