How much do you think the Members of the Order know about the black veil ? If they were aware of it's affects, why would they battle right there ? (I realize they didn't consciously choose to but seems they could have been more careful)

When I first read Book 5, I was a little surprised at the sudden, odd way that Sirius died. I hadn't expected the veil to be what it was. After he went through the veil, Lupin knew immediately that Sirius was "gone". This text makes me think Bellatrix knew as well the affect of the veil/archway.

OoTP, pg. 806, Amer. ed., "Harry heard Bellatrix Lestrange's triumphant scream,".

This was right after Sirius fell through. If they were aware of the capabilities of the veil, then why weren't they more careful ? It's a powerful "thing" obviously which makes me wonder why they would battle right there practically on top of it. Of course it's evaporated potions at this point but it was a terrible way for him to die after all he'd survived, especially if he KNEW about the veil/archway capabilities.

Another comment, it was interesting to read Hermione's reaction to the veil when they first came upon it. Even she knew it was something they were better off staying away from.
