<quote> I also lean towards the possibility that Peter was in love
with Lily, and that the reason LV might have been willing to spare
her had something to do with that. (Another reason might be that
Lily was related in some way to LV, possibly through his mother as a
distant cousin. Since he seems to have only ever have had feelings
towards her, he may possibly have been reluctant to kill someone he
knew to be a magical relation of his mother's-even a distant
one...but not one involved in The Prophecy). <end quote>

I disagree. If Peter were to have a crush on Lily, Harry would have
noticed it when he watched Snape's memory. Voldemort never cared
about his close family members (or else he would have let them
live) - why would he care for some unknown relation?
It is odd that LV says Lily shouldn't have died, but we must
remember the circumstances in which he said it. In PS/SS he was
taunting Harry. In PoA, he was anxious to finish Harry off. LV is a
terrific lier. He wanted Lily out of the way and was too eager to
kill him to care whether she lived or not. What could one woman do?
Not to mention unarmed? With Harry dead, his reign will be secure,
and then, if it pleased him, he will get rid of the Mudblood.
