Catlady responded:
LV didn't have to know that Peter was in the Order to know that Peter
was a close friend of James Potter. I assume that once LV learned of
Harry and Neville, he assigned agents to probe all close friends of
James, Lily, Frank, or Alice. With Peter, he hit pay dirt.

Carol again:
That's not quite what I meant. I'm sure you're right that LV didn't
know that Peter was in the Order to begin with. He may not have even
been aware of its existence. But we know that the Order members were
"being picked off one by one" by DEs (quoted from memory). Someone (a
spy) had to tell LV who these people were. I think the spy must have
been Peter, who first confessed that *he* was a member and then made
up for that terrible transgression (as LV would have viewed it) by
ratting on his friends--not just the Potters, but all of the
members--the McKinnons, the Prewetts, Benjy Fenwick, and so on. If I'm
right, Peter is partly responsible for the deaths of a lot more people
than James, Lily, and twelve Muggles. Either that or there was more
than one spy and traitor in the original Order.
