So Harry is not only Sirisus's Godson but also his legal ward and Hogwarts obviously accept this, quite what this means I do not know.

Also IIRC Sirisus's mother was still alive when he was sent to Azkaban, he still inherited. I would think that this would be despite his mothers wishes.

So obviously there are strict rules, I just wish that we knew them.
