Or maybe she used her favourite animal because that's the sort 
of thing writers do? :-) JKR has said before that Hermione is the 
character with whom she most identifies. If *I* were writing the 
story, for example, Hermione's patronus would be a unicorn - no 
special reason, I just like unicorns. (g) So maybe there's no 
special reason except that Hermione is the JKR alter-ego and 
she likes otters?

Which doesn't mean she won't survive, just that the author isn't 
necessarily telling you anything here.
