"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the Morning!"
I'm quite sure that the Lucius/Lucifer connection is deliberate and
intended to be fairly obvious. Not that Lucius was ever an archangel,
so he can't "fall" in the sense that Lucifer did, but he certainly
represents evil in a more attractive form than Voldemort--who *did*
fall, from prefect and model student to murderer and tyrant.

But in Lucius's case, we don't know when or how or why he became evil.
I think JKR shares Tolkien's view that "nothing is evil in the
beginning." If so, Lucius's own choices have brought him to where he
is now. I think, though, that the name is mostly ironic. To me, he
seems more like Mephistopheles than Lucifer/Satan--a tempter (look at
his relationship to Fudge) rather than a great and beautiful being
destroyed by pride. Not, I'm afraid, a tragic or epic figure.

It's interesting that Lucius (Light) married a Black (Darkness), but
since not all of the Blacks are "Dark," there's probably nothing to
the imagery suggested by the names. I find it amusing to imagine that
Narcissa, the blonde Dark witch, brought about Lucius/Lucifer's fall,
but I doubt it happened that way. From what little we know of
Narcissa, she and Lucius appear to be two of a kind ("Dark, bad
wizards," as Dobby calls them). Despite the contrasting names, they're
a perfect match.

And note the last name: Malfoy (bad faith). No much hope for
redemption with a name like that.
