I agree with you, the morality seems to be different.

Fudge must have known something though for him to come after Hagrid
concerning the Chamber some 50 years later.

Hmmmm....usually, even in a 'cover-up', there are a few people in authority who are 'in the know' as to what really happened. They may S***-can the information (IE lock it away forever, never to be seen again), but it's still there and someone always knows where to find it--usually someone who was involved in the first place. Perhaps Fudge was part of an inquiry to find out what happened to Myrtle, and worked hand-in-hand to help Dippet keep the real information under wraps?

After all, after all we have seen of Fudge and some of his admittedly underhanded way of 'denying' things he doesn't want getting out among the general public (Harry' reputation and Voldemort's return getting all skewed through the Daily Prophet for example), I can see him willing to engage in a little dishonesty in regards to Myrtle's death, especially if he felt that the knowledge that "The Heir of Slytherin" was hanging around would get everyone's panties in a bunch.

And if he were still vying for MOM postion at that point, he would be even more hot to have things 'a certain way' in order to help him get into postion to take over the Minister's position...and everything being 'under control', including in the innoculous death of a young girl at Hogwarts, might have been one of those things he felt he needed to back his postion.

Fudge has *always* seemed to have a rather large blind spot in regards to Tom/Voldy/The Heir of Slytherin anyway. And it's a rather convienient one too, if you think about it (Goes away right quick when he can't 'cover it up' anymore). It's always made me wonder about him--I don't really buy into the 'innocently stupid' theory, or even that he's 'willfully ignorant' of the whole Voldy situation. I think he knows more than he's letting on--I would be tempted to say he's actaully on Voldy';s team in one way or the other (either willingly, or so Imperio'd it's not even funny...)

Anyhow, just a little speculation...

**Glad to be back**
