My reply:

Well, there are lots of ways to think about this question. I have actually given it quite a lot of thought because I truly believe that Petunia Dursley will be murdered in this book, leaving Harry with no protection. Perhaps, I'm reading into this far too much but JKR did say this was Harry's shortest stay at 4 Privet Dr, now why would that be?

As for why Dumbledore put him there, I think we see a good deal of reasons in OOTP. One reason is it would give him a environment where perhaps he would not end up as arrogant as his father was. I know this is stretching but when a child placed in a situation where all his needs are met, he knows who he is very early, and he has had time to digest the whole Voldemort thing. I realize that Harry isn't as arrogant as his father seemingly was, but we have seen some evidence of Harry being a bit cocky. Anyone remember the whole, "I'm the one that defeated Voldemort in the Chamber, I got the sorcerer's stone." (I note this isn't a direct quote.) I'm paraphrasing a great deal. But I mean imagine if he knew who he was his entire life. I mean it would be like "Wow, I defeated Voldemort when I was a baby." Instead of just being confused by it as a preteen. The boy was so insecure about himself and had time to accept defeat that he realized that he might be able to change the wizarding
world forever but he isn't so high and mighty that he can't get hurt, hurt a friend, or worst be susceptible to the forces of evil that are around him.

~Melanie, who is fairly sure that made no sense at all.
