This is the time line as I understand it.  Although I concede canon 
is not firm on it.  I think it was 5th year that the boys became 
animagi. So by OWLS they would only have been out together a few 
times.  Then in 6th year the prank happens.

Wheter or not Serius intended murder, James knew a death could happen 
and a life could be ruined.  He risked his life to save both Severus 
and Remus. I think this became a turning point for James, although 
neither Severus nor Serius seem to have changed much.

Serius says that James and Severus continued to hex each other, but I 
also had the impression that for James it wasn't just out of boredom 
anymore and certainly not to get attention.
