If I may stand shoulder to shoulder with my worthy fellow countryman 
(shock horror - Kneasy and Geoff agreeing on something???) - to take 
passporrts as an example, mine have always been entitled "United 
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

Along with Kneasy, I rest my case.
