It is canon that Sirius was 16 years old at the time of the prank.
That means it happened during the 6th year if Sirius' age follows
the usual pattern. I do think this is when James stopped tormenting
Severus. It would be rather stupid to continue to provoke Snape
when he knew such a volitile scret about Lupin, regardless of
whether or not Professor Dumbledore had forbade him to reveal it.

Bookworm:
As I posted earlier, Snape accuses Sirius of attempted murder when
they were 16. Depending on when Sirius' birthday is, he could have
been 16 by the end of 5th year. After all, Ron turned 16 in March
during OoP.

We also know from PoA that it took James and Sirius "the better part
of three years" to become animagi. (It took Peter until their fifth
year to do it.) Assuming that they figured out Remus was a werewolf
no later than about half-way through their first year, they could
have become animagi by the end of their fourth year. Therefore, the
Prank *could* have occurred during their fifth year.

I'm not arguing that it did - I really haven't decided. We know
*something* happened during sixth year to 'scare James straight' but
I'm not sure it was the Prank. I believe there is much more to the
story between James, Sirius and Severus that we haven't heard yet.

SB4E:

I too was not arguing that it did happen, but only that it could have happened during their fifth year. The thing about James is that something happened and he straightened up during the 6th year, but it didn't necessarily have anything to do with Severus. After all Lupin tells Harry in OOTP that he continued to hex Severus even after he had stopped hexing others for the fun of it. He says "Severus was a special case."
