I don't know if he's dead or not, there are always surprises.  But I 
remember an interview with JKR and---I'm paraphrasing--she said she had 
just written that chapter with Sirius and came downstairs crying and her 
husband, Neil, asked what she was crying about.  She said she just 
killed off an important character.  And he said so don't kill him.  And 
JKR laughed and said What do doctors know about it?
