enable him to detect something was off in the energy?

Carol:
At first it probably didn't occur to Dumbledore to question Moody's
behavior, which was known to be eccentric--and Barty Jr. was not only
extremely intelligent but questioned the poor Imperio'd Moody pretty
thoroughly on his habits and history. Also, conveniently for Barty, he
and Moody disliked (or hated) many of the same people. More important,
Snape tells Harry that Legilmency depends on eye contact, and it isn't
easy to make eye contact with either the real or the fake Moody, even
if DD spent much more time than he does face to face with his teachers.

However, I think that bits and pieces of Crouch!Moody's behavior
(notably turning Draco into a ferret and Imperioing his students)
started to add up, and in the back of his mind started fitting
together with larger puzzles--who put Harry's name into to Goblet of
Fire and what happened to Barty Crouch Sr. among them. It appears that
DD still trusted him enough to involve him in the investigation into
Crouch Sr.'s madness, but his too hasty appearance on the scene may
have been a big clue that something wasn't right, especially if DD
talked with Snape afterwards and found that Snape had *not* sent
"Moody" into the forest, as "Moody" claimed. I think that when
Crouch!Moody took Harry away from the TriWizard Tournament, all the
pieces he'd been puzzling over suddenly slid together in Dumbledore's
brain and he knew at that point exactly who was impersonating Moody
and how he was doing it. Pretty smart man, Dumbledore--not omniscient,
but intelligent, observant, and wise with 150 years' experience in the WW.
