Voldy (in Quirrel) was at Hogwarts with Snape (not too quick are you
DD?). He heard Snape threaten Quirrel about the stone. LV knows
Snape is a traitor, right?
So Snape is the death eater who "one is a traitor, and certainly will
die"-LV in GoF. Right?
Bet he dies protecting Harry, fulfilling the debt to James.
Whatcha think?
Carol:
We've discussed this topic in quite a bit of detail in numerous
threads, so I'll just say here that I agree that Snape is the one that
LV (correctly) believes has left him and will not return. Also LV
certainly knows that Snape is at Hogwarts and tried to thwart
Quirrell. He also knows (IMO) that neither Snape nor Karkaroff obeyed
the summons to appear in the graveyard, and whatever his faults, LV
knows enough about his (former) DEs to determine which is the coward
who fled and which remained at Hogwarts on principle (loyalty to
Dumbledore, opposition to LV, and self-interest all in one).
However, I also think that LV may have been persuaded (by Snape via
Lucius Malfoy) that Snape could not appear in the graveyard because
you can't apparate from Hogwarts. He may even have been convinced
through shrewd arguments (again conveyed to him from Snape via Malfoy)
that Snape is still loyal after all (unless Crouch!Moody indicated
otherwise in his eagle owl-delivered messages). Even if LV still
suspects that Snape is a "traitor" (from his perspective), Malfoy may
have persuaded him not to kill Snape just yet as he's still a useful
contact. (Matters may have changed since the battle in the DoM, which
may have thrown Snape's loyalties into question yet again. If I were
LV, I'd suspect him of alerting the Order members, but we'll have to
wait till Book 6 to know for sure.)
At any rate, I think it's important to realize that Voldemort is not a
prophet, and however correct he may be in interpreting Snape's true
loyalties, his statement that Snape will be killed cannot be viewed as
a valid prediction. LV's ability to see the future and to manipulate
future events has been shown to be rather limited. His statement that
Snape will be killed "of course" merely reflects his view of matters
at that time. He also thought that Harry would be revealed as a false
threat to his power and publicly killed.
I agree that Snape will attempt (yet again, and probably more than
once) to fulfill his life debt to James, and I'm guessing he'll
succeed dramatically in Book 7, where JKR has promised that he'll do
something unexpected. That does not, however, mean that he'll die. I
personally am hoping he won't. Hogwarts won't be Hogwarts without
Snape, who in my view should survive into the Epilogue and receive
that DADA post at last.
