I also have wondered at the simple spells used during that battle and
their effectiveness at holding off the DE's.

I offer this analogy: There is a Star Trek NG episode where Data
plays a computer game with a Champion. The first time he plays Data
does well but loses after a while. At the end of the episode, he
plays again and to the frustration of the Champion, Data holds his
own until the Champion quits in frustration. The change in strategy
was that Data simply played to defend himself not to defeat the
opponent. The Champion could not "win" when Data simply but
effectively defended himself.

I read the battle scene much the same way. DA did its best when it
acted in ways that defended themselves. Their goal seemed to be
escape, not to defeat or kill the DE's.

I am also wondering how this could play out in the "defeat of
Voldie? Will there be a clear, knock down, drag out, death and
destruction finale?
