In PoA, his reaction to finding Harry, Ron and Hermione with
Lupin and Sirius in the Shrieking Shack has also struck me as a bit odd
in that his first direct comment to Harry is to point out that he was
saving his life.

Hi I am new here but I just wanted to say that I don't think that
Snape was just after Sirius, he was after him because everyone
believed Sirius was after Harry. Snape is always looking out for
Harry and in more than one situation he has helped him. It is stated
in PS that Snape was the ref for the one match to keep Harry safe.
They figured that with Snape on the field that he would be safe. It
seems that Snape is trying to prove to Harry that he is on his side
and does not really want to hurt him.

(Snape's constant harping on Harry, for example). Then again, I'm
also one of the ones that thinks Snape's treatment of Harry is more
than *just* a frustrated adult taking out his temper on
a 'defenseless' boy--granted, it isn't 'just' a hatred of James's offspring...

But I think the main reason for his "hatred" being so visible is because he is
a spy for Dumbledore against Voldemort. It is Harry that Voldemort
wants dead. With Draco in the same classes Snape has to be extra
mean to harry and his friends to keep it believable that he is on the
Dark Side. If Snape is able to keep Malfoy happy, there is somebody to stand
up for him if questions of loyalty comes up.
