Not to mention how bad it would look to the reader and to Harry for
James to save Severus's life and then revert to his old habits of
tormenting him. We also know that Lily started going out with James in
their seventh year, which means that he had changed. It makes sense
that the change began with a courageous act, saving an enemy, and that
both that action and a desire to impress Lily caused him to give up
hexing Severus (and anyone else who annoyed him). It makes no sense at
all that he would save Severus and then revert to annoying him--a
superior "you owe me your life" smile on occasion would be enough to
satisfy his remaining dislike of "Snivellus."

SB4E:

Problem is that he didn't save Severus' life and then stop hexing him. We know that he saved Severus' life prior to the 7th year. We know that he started dating Lily in the 7th year. But we also know...see the chat in the fire between Lupin, Sirius, and Harry...that he stopped hexing people for fun, yet when Harry says, "Even Snape?" They tell Harry that Severus was a special case. That Severus never missed a chance to hex James and basically he returned the favor. And when Harry asks if his mother is ok with that, they tell him that she didn't know...which means the hexing of Severus was still going on in the 7th year after he had saved Severus' life.
