akh: I have one word for you: chemistry.  Well, actually, I have a bunch of words, but you kow what I mean.  If JKR has decided that Hermione and Ron have the chemistry, who are we to argue?  

In reading the books, I have gotten the impression that she is building the case for Harry and Hermione being extremely compatible in every way except in the physical attraction arena.  Ron and Hermione have quite a few differences, but if they have chemistry, that goes a long way toward reconciling other difficulties.

Given JKR's penchant for mixing fantasy with psycho/social reality, it wouldn't surprise me if she goes the chemistry route; look at her own apparently very close but Platonic RL relationship with Sean Harris, who has morphed into Ron in the books.  

Hmm, now that I've said that, it may be a strong argument for Ron and Hermione to have an intense but not long-lasting attachment.
