I was just wondering... As Dumbledore tells Harry that they were 
animagi, he marvels more on the fact that they could hide it from him 
than that they managed to do it!

So, I think that (with James and Sirius being top on everything and 
bright students at that...) well, maybe this animagi-business was  
Fidelius Charmed with Sirius as the Secret Keeper, so Lupin clearly 
could NOT tell Dumbledore or Harry about it! (Sirius decided to break 
the spell when he told Dumbledore his story, feeling that the more 
people knew of the rat the better - unfortunately, it also exposed 
his own dog-form!)
