Yes, something is going on between Ron and Hermione-- JKR has said as much,
but to imply that the R/H ship is a foregone conclusion, and that any other
ship is simply a matter of "hyper-rationalization" is going a bit far. How
is that digging for shipping clues and arguing about whether they're real or
just red herrings, is any different than what other non-shippers do in terms
of their theories? Aren't those who argue for vampire!Snape or ESE!Lupin
engaging in much the same process? How then is it, then, that a shipper who
engages in such debate is no longer theorizing, but "hyper-rationalizating"?

I agree that one can find evidence for almost any ship if one really looks
for it, but that evidence will not be equally strong for all ships. Strong
arguments can be put forth for both R/H and H/H, and that is why ship
debates have been going on as long as they have, with the intensity that
they have. It is not just a matter of the wishful thinking of those aboard,
but because convincing arguments can be made for each ship. If there weren't
solid arguments for ships other than R/H (such as H/H or H/G) then debates
would have fizzled out and been over and done with long ago. The fact that
people can and do still discuss shipping matters means that there's still
something to debate, and that there are two sides which are reasonably well
matched.

Best,
