I read about a year ago a HP companion in a bookstore that was 
certain that the twins used a time-turner or something.  Was it 
Galadriel Waters first book?  Probably.

More interestingly, as you mention, perhaps it was not a time-TURNER 
per se.  Perhaps they just had a means or device to peek a little 
ahead.

(Perhaps they heard their little brother Seer!Ron mumbling in his 
sleep... just kidding...)
