At the risk of sounding nasty when I don't want to...perhaps these 
two things were left out of the You-Know-Whats *because* they won't 
play into the plot in any way??  Perhaps these two references in the 
books were foreshadowing of the link between Harry & Neville--yes, 
there is one by virtue of their both having been possible candidates 
for The One--but perhaps that's ALL the link between them is?
