Surely it's fairly well established that Harry was born in 1980 so 
his First Year at Hogwarts was 1991/2 and thus his Second Year was 
1992/3. Harry hears the Basilisk's voice for the first time after 
doing his detention with Lockhart in September 1992 which dates the 
previous events as 1942, if it is exactly the 50th anniversary.
