All the adults, with the possible exception of Dumbledore, are 
afraid of Voldemort.  The point is being willing to say Voldemort's 
name *even though* you're afraid of him. For most people it's 
their first act of defiance. But Snape is rather beyond that. Of 
course it might be the *last* act of defiance for him ::sobs::
