Harry -- Pure-blood or Half-blood? (Re: Voldemort CHOSE to attack Harry)

Why do we all assume that James Potter was a full blood wizard and 
not a mudblood also? Has JKR discussed this in any interviews or in 
any of the 5 books so far and some how I managed to miss it?
Any help in clearing this up would be appreciated.
