So I (as a brit) read it as ancestor WAS a genuine mistake and she is 
openly acknowledging it in a humorous way, albeit understandable only to 
Brits."

Thank you, digger, for clearing that up.  I watch a lot of British televison and 'get' some of this stuff, but that one just didn't click.
