"Yeah, I'm with Nora on this one.  Snape is too filled with tension to
have been a good guy all the time.  And I think its much more
satisfying plot-wise to have a genuine repented DE now fighting for
good than otherwise.  This isn't a series about black and white
characters; there are shades of gray too.  And Snape is the most
interesting shade of gray around.  There's no doubt in my mind he's
done horrible things in the past.  That Dumbledore can get past this
to let him close to children is one of the mysteries of the books."

Of course he's done horrible things in the past, he was a DE!  He had to do horrible things or he would have been found out.  DD knows he's done horrible things...even if it was just brewing poisonous potions.  The fact that DD still lets him teach is still one of the mysteries of the books.
