Depends also on what we mean by "life debt". Canon comes close to 
using the term...

"Pettigrew owes his life to you. You have sent Voldemort a deputy who 
is in your debt..."

(POA "Owl Post Again" p.311 UK edition)

How does he repay a debt? Send a cheque for £350.67? Take Harry out 
for a meal? It's got to be deeper than that....
