Alshain (apologies if this has come up before, it's been some days
since I perused the Lupin thread):

We don't know yet what Lupin has been doing off-camera. Canon states
that he was absent from Grimmauld Place for extended periods in the
summer, away on Order business. He could be up to something that the
others can't do; among the fanon ideas the most well-known is that he
may be acting as Dumbledore's ambassador to Dark creatures in the UK
and in Europe (or digging up magical objects of power, *affectionate
smile at the thought of Professor Lupin rigged out as Indiana Jones*.)

But the main problem I see in your argument is that it would be
extremely foreign and out of character for Dumbledore to think in
terms of cost-efficiency calculus. He supports the Muggle-borns, the
animals and centaurs in the Forbidden Forest, Hagrid and Lupin
because he thinks it's the right and decent thing to do, not because
he expects to be rewarded for it or as terms of a bargain.

Alshain
