Perhaps Tom chose to be possessed to gain immortality (selling you're
soul to the devil).  It's our choices who make us who we are.  Maybe
the thing that is worse than death is being possessed by evil.  Or,
maybe the thing that's worse than death is if the daemon is removed,
perhaps VM will lose his powers and become useless or ineffective,
like Saruman in LotR.
