For some reason, each time I read that quote from JKR, I remember the 
interview where a little boy asked whether Snape would ever fall in 
love, and she answered that she was Shocked, shocked at the question, 
and we would find out why in Book Seven.

Maybe this has something to do with his potential redemption, as 
opposed to LV's lack of it?  Similarly, Harry's compassion, special 
power, etc. seem to tie in.  So perhaps somehow this theme does lead 
into HBP, Book 6...
